090816_Grandin Print shop

On to where the Book of Mormon was printed the 1st time.  It is up in the town of Palmyra, just East of the center of town, East of the "Four Churches".  Somewhat difficult to miss that corner.  No, I didn't take a picture 'cause I was driving but you can't miss it if you ever go there because all directions are from that particular intersection for the entire town.

The Grandin Print Shop and sign out in front.
The shop sold all kinds of supplies from their counter.  Anything that had to do with the publishing business.  Grandin wasn't very excited about the Book of Mormon project as it was a very large order and he didn't think Joseph would be able to sell them all and pay his bills.  The books sold for about $1.25 apiece.
This is the original back door, now below grade level and inside the museum on the premises.
Another original, 1st edition copy of the Book of Mormon.
Some of the displays located upstairs.
A view of the print shop area upstairs.  The voice is our guide, Sister Olivas.  She had ended her mission a few days before but had some time to fill in so she was working that day.  It was her last day and she said we were quite possibly her last "customers" of her mission.  She is from the Philippines and will be returning the next week.  She loves red heads.  Hear that Elder Seger?  She was trying to decide where to go to college for her education and asked us a few questions.  We talked about a lot of other things.

These are inking balls and up in the left corner are some lead type that was found during an investigation of the site.  Our guide said that these were used by Grandin himself while he was printing the Book of Mormon so they have some significance to the church.
Sister Olivas showing us how to do some of the binding process for the books.
MOre of the shop and how it was done.  Arlene had folded a section of the book as a demo.
This is what a good condition copy of a 1st edition looks like.
After our tour we went a couple of doors down and visited a Harvest Bookstore (LDS Bookstore) and looked through what they had to offer.  Found a few good things for our trip back to California.

We had decided the day was about done for us and we needed to head back to the hotel.  The next day we were going to start back to Nauvoo, clean up/pack and start the trek towards home.  But, it has been a great time being back here and seeing all of these wonderful sites back here in the heart of Joseph's home where he grew up and the church started.
